Tips for Changing Up Your Skincare Routine for the Fall Season

The seasons are changing, and so should your skincare routine. As we shift from summer to fall, it’s important to pay attention to how your skin is responding. Be aware of how your skin reacts throughout the day and adjust your routine accordingly.

Here are some tips on how to transition into the new season without skipping a beat!

Try a New Cleanser

Cleansers are an important first step in any routine, but paying attention to skin type is vital.  For skin that tends to be on the oily side, sulfate-free gel cleansers usually work best, while milky or oil based cleansers are better for dry, mature, or sensitive skin. You’ll be able to tell whether or not your cleanser is providing enough moisture by how soft or tight your face feels after cleansing. The softer your skin, the more hydration it maintained during the cleansing process. Using a gentle exfoliator once a week to get rid of any dead skin can help prevent dullness and breakouts and assit the body’s natural renewal process.

Use Toner

If you’ve been skipping this one, now’s the time to change that. During the fall and winter months, clients can swap out astringent toners for moisturizing ones.  In the summer, your best bet for a toner is a refreshing one that wicks away oil, but for the cooler months, make sure your toner provides extra moisture. Avoid toners that contain alcohol and opt for ones with hydrating hyaluronic acid.

After cleansing, using a moisturizing toner will prepare the skin to absorb products while locking in hydration and balancing pH.

Change Up Your Moisturizer

As the air becomes cooler and drier, it’s easy for your skin to become dehydrated. If you are someone who has naturally oily skin, you may be able to keep using your summer moisturizer during the day, but you may need to use something a little heavier for night. For normal to dry skin, switch to a heavier or thicker moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and full of life all day long. To avoid flaking, you can add a hydrating serum into your routine in the morning and at night.
