Your 5-Step Checklist for a Spring Skin Audit

April 18th is well behind us, and you’ve tidily taken care of your taxes (or not-so-tidily—but at least they’re finished). Before you turn your attention too quickly to those long awaited summer plans though, pause for a moment to consider a springtime “audit” of your skincare products.

Now that winter is over, the change of season demands that you transition from a focus on heavy-duty hydration to exfoliation and sun protection. Spend an hour this weekend combing through your products, tossing anything out of date and stashing what you can save for next winter. Then, make a list of skincare musts to invest in for the upcoming warmer spring and summer months, from vitamin-rich serums to a trip to Green City, your best bet for all-natural waxing alternatives in Philadelphia.

1. Check expiration dates. Just like you regularly clean out your fridge and get rid of any expired food, you should take note of the expiration dates on your skincare products. Using expired product may not hurt you (with the exception of sunscreen), but you won’t be getting the max benefits.

  1. Make sure your SPF is free of any yucky chemicals, dyes, or fragrance. Sunscreen is notorious for harboring chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which may be linked to hormone disruption. Stick to sunscreens that use minerals like zinc or titanium oxide as their primary protectant. And make sure your sunscreen is providing physical protection of at least 30 SPF to stave off sun damage.
  2. Switch out your heavy cream for a lighter moisturizing lotion. As the humidity rises, your skin no longer needs a thick day cream to keep skin supple. A lighter lotion is perfectly appropriate for summer. However, dry skin is still a risk, so look for something with hyaluronic acid to maintain as much moisture as possible.
  3. Add in a serum. Serums are highly concentrated and lighter than creams and lotions, so they deliver a targeted dose of the active ingredients. Their rich-yet-lightweight formulation is great for this time of year. Wear your serum under your daily sunscreen or foundation to glow all day long.
  4. Clean out those pores! A heavier winter skin care regimen and drier skin could have left skin needing a good exfoliation.  Prepare for a dewy, glowing summer complexion with something that will help with cell turnover and purge any clogged pores. A combination AHA or BHA exfoliating serum will do nicely. Our favorite is Ecco Bella Leave-On Exfoliant, which can be found at our salon.

Speaking of the salon, no spring cleaning routine is finished without a visit to a skincare professional. At Green City, our staff can recommend sugaring hair removal services in Philadelphia that not only get your skin smooth and beach-ready, but also gently exfoliate away any trace of winter. Organic facials, all-natural alternatives to waxing, and more at our salon in Philadelphia can complete your springtime cleanse.
