Waxing and Shaving vs. Sugaring: The Hair Removal Breakdown

Sometimes it just makes sense to bring back certain methods that are tried and true. At Green City Beauty, we did just that. Avoid the sticks and strips and bypass the risk of burns with a more simplistic and completely natural method of hair removal. Dating all the way back to the ancient Egyptians, sugaring was once the most prevalent method of hair removal. Today, it is being brought back by us, and we recently won Philadelphia magazine’s Best of Philly® 2016 – Best Hair Removal award because of it!

How does sugaring work?

With a gloved hand, a fresh ball of sugar paste is applied, adhering to the hair. It is then removed from the body via a gentle flicking motion, which pulls the hair in the direction it grows, getting the root every time. This eliminates both breakage and the oh-so-hated ingrown hairs many experience from waxing or shaving. Sugaring also allows for an experience that leaves your skin feeling even smoother.

Why isn’t waxing worth it?

Waxing carries the risk of removing live skin cell, but sugaring is an organic alternative that only adheres to hair and dead skin, meaning it leave skin smooth without abrasion.  If the wax is too warm, burning, inflammation, and skin irritation can occur, while that’s not the case with the sugar paste that is warmed only to room temperature.

Sugar waxing–it’s not the same

Do not let sugaring be confused with what other salons bill as Brazilian sugar waxing or sugar waxing: Green City Beauty offers the ancient method of sugaring hair removal, which is not a form of waxing. It is never hot and does not use sticks or strips of any kind.

What about shaving?

The other alternative to waxing is what we’re all familiar with: shaving. Shaving is time-consuming and can be rough on skin too. Think about it: scraping your skin with a sharp razor. Cutting yourself and wearing down skin cells can occur.  Not to mention, exposure to all the chemicals in shaving cream or soap can build up over time. Sugaring avoids the chemicals and artificial scents by turning to the pure and natural option.

Sugaring’s award-winning advantages

We’re excited to have put sugaring on the map here in Philadelphia!  As we already mentioned in an earlier post, even the medical community is now talking about this modern revival of an ancient technique, even more exciting!  As a natural way of exfoliating, sugaring removes the dead surface cells with superior hair removal results. It’s:

  • Quick
  • Sanitary
  • Long-lasting
  • Gentle
  • All-Natural/Organic

Sugaring also becomes less painful the more you do it since the hair becomes more and more refined from repeated treatments. It is perfect for all skin types, hair textures, and skin sensitivities, making it the perfect choice for those looking to treat themselves right.
